Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Torch Songs, Showstoppers & A Little Male Flesh

Fundraisers are typically so tedious that they’re more effective than Ambien CR at putting you to sleep, and keeping you asleep. Not so at Uptown Players’ annual “Broadway Our Way” extravaganza. This year’s theme: “Divas Awakening.”

And we’re here to tell you, the divas are not only awake, they’re running around with smiles on their faces like they just downed an entire can of Red Bull and chased it with a bottle of Lexapro.

(We wonder if we have a prescription drug problem?)

If you can snag one of the few remaining tickets, here’s what’s in store, theatre whores:

For nearly two-and-a-half hours, there’s a non-stop living jukebox of 36 songs. (That’s only $1.11 each with your $40 ticket!) The showtunes run the gamut of current hits, classic Broadway and a few you may have never heard before.

The twist?

All the roles typically sung by female characters are sung by men and vice versa. A few tweaks of the lyrics here, a half-naked John de los Santos there and you’ve got a helluva show.

The fetching Coy Covington goes all serious on us for a couple of songs, but brings the funny at the end of the show in a great duet with John Garcia in his very subdued outfit.

Each performance is capped off by a reception, but the real draw for those of us with unfulfilled The Price is Right fantasies is the showcase of fabulous prizes up for bid.

More than 100 auction items are available ranging from autographed pictures of Betty White to a free RSVP cruise or roundtrip American Airlines tickets. Bring lots of cash, and learn from the experts – if you don’t want to put your name on every single ticket, bring a roll of return address labels.

You’ll be helping bring more great gay theater to Dallas and who knows, you could just walk away with that autographed Ugly Betty journal you didn’t get for Christmas.

Tickets: $40
Runs through Sunday, January 18 with performances Thursday – Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
