Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Queer As An American Express Platinum Card

Being a responsible member of the gay community takes support. From push-up bras and duct tape for our female impersonator friends to jock straps and weight-lifting belts for the gym bunnies, we know what it means to keep everything in its appropriate place.

But the most important kind of support is that which we give those who believe in us for who we are. And that’s why we love getting the annual Buying for Equality guide from the Human Rights Campaign.

Every year, HRC compiles a list of companies and rates them on a scale of 0 to 100 based on whether or not they have anti-discrimination protections, domestic partner benefits, diversity training, transgender-inclusive benefits and other practices that provide equality for GLBT people.

This year’s guide contains a record 260 companies that received perfect scores, including Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Walgreens. Other companies received far lower scores, such as Lillian Vernon (who buys that crap anyway?) and John Deere (tractors? Are you really surprised?).

The list covers entertainment companies, pharmaceutical giants and automobiles. Believe it or not, Chrysler, Ford and GM all scored 100. Maybe the gays could be the secret to bailing these guys out. Just trade in your Nissans (50 pts) and get into a PT Cruiser, Focus or decked-out Caddie and slap your HRC bumper sticker on the back.

But whatever you drive, fill your tank with anything but ExxonMobil. They once again have a score of ZERO. That cute little tiger appears to be a big homophobe.

But don’t just jump on the boycott bandwagon. Find out why the companies that scored low made the scores they did. Then do something to make a difference.
