When it comes to getting our sci-fi geek on, we only have two requirements: skin-tight, quasi-futuristic costumes with great boots, and a hot leading man. Thankfully, the Star Trek reboot from J.J. Abrams has both.
And let us tell you right now, Chris Pine as Captain Kirk just makes our Tribbles tremble. Yeah, we’ll take you boldly where you’ve never gone before, Mr. Pine. Just hop on board our USS EnterThighs, because your phaser is already set to stun and ours is set to submissive.
For us, Pine is the main attraction, but the rest of the film is highly entertaining, even when he’s not on screen. Now we must admit, we were never huge followers of the original series, but watched enough key episodes and the first few theatrical releases (who can resist a pointy-eared Kirstie Alley?) to know that this origin story featuring the crew of the USS Enterprise should please die-hard fans and newbies alike.
The plot isn’t overly complicated, which is a good thing. Too often, sci-fi filmmakers get bogged down in trying to justify their million-dollar pocket protectors by introducing complicated concepts that just detract from the explosions and laser fights.
Instead, Star Trek deftly blends humor, high-caliber action and emotional drama for a very satisfying joy ride through hyperspace.
And did we mention that there’s a Captain Kirk underwear scene? There we go again. Looks like we’ve got a one Trek mind.
