Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

The Night Is Falling! The Night Is Falling!

With only one performance left of Before Night Falls the world premiere opera at the Fort Worth Opera Festival, we are tingly in all the right places. It’s like meeting someone for the first time after a long courtship on an Internet dating site (only far less X-rated). We’ve been writing about, reading about, and yes, dreaming about this production for so long that we just want to fast-forward to Sunday afternoon. (If we’re lucky, we’ll make it to third base!)

The Fort Worth Opera Festival is easily one of the most important cultural events of the year in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and we think it’s actually a vital part of balancing out our decadent ways.

We know most of you (and us) will be half-naked by a pool somewhere this weekend, frosty beverage in hand, listening to a continuous loop of Lady Gaga and covers from Glee. So you see, we need something to balance out our extravagant side. It’s like the Vibrato Yin to our Margarita Yang.

If you haven’t read the memoir, Before Night Falls, or seen the Javier Bardem/Johnny Depp film, then here’s the Cliff Notes version of the story. It focuses on Reinaldo Arenas, a man living in Cuba when Fidel Castro takes power of the island nation. Arenas is a counter-revolutionary, and also gay. These two traits lead to his imprisonment and torture until he’s finally able to escape to America. Unfortunately, it isn’t long before he succumbs to AIDS. Before he dies, however, he writes a harrowing memoir of his time in Cuba and his new life in the United States.

Composed by Jorge Martín (also born in Cuba) and starring gorgeous baritone Wes Mason as Reinaldo Arenas, the music is haunting and gorgeously produced, and the transition from memoir to opera seems a most natural fit.

Tickets are still available, and Fort Worth Opera is offering Gay List Daily readers 30% off single tickets to all three operas (Before Night Falls, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Donizetti’s The Elixir of Love) for this final weekend. Use online coupon code: GLIST30, restrictions do apply.

It’s a threesome you won’t mind telling your Mom about.
