Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Take Your Hat Off, Stay Awhile

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or ignoring our e-mails), you know this is a big gay weekend in Fort Worth, so we’re pushing the idea of packing your bags and making a mini vacation out of it.

This weekend is the last chance to catch one or all the operas at the Fort Worth Opera Festival, and also the only opportunity to see the great gay films at Q Cinema, Fort Worth’s Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival. Our recommendations include Ticked-Off Trannies with Knives, a genuinely shocking and scary thriller, and Violet Tendencies starring none other than Mindy Cohn (Natalie from The Facts of Life!) and our good (hot!) friend and former Gay List Daily NYC writer, Jesse Archer. There are dozens of other films, including great shorts and documentaries, too. (Click here for the complete schedule. It’s one of the best festivals around, gay, straight or otherwise.)

After sitting through hours of opera and gay films, not to mention stuffing yourself full of champagne, popcorn and Junior Mints, you’re bound to get tired. So we say, “Get a room!”

We recently stayed at the Sheraton Fort Worth Hotel and Spa and loved every minute of it. The property is just across the street from the Fort Worth Water Gardens, made famous in the film Logan’s Run, one of our favorite hangouts over the weekend. And funny enough, just like the film, we didn’t allow anyone in our room over the age of 29. (Nothing like a theme!)

The hotel is right on the edge of downtown, so it’s close to everything you could ever want to do in Sundance Square and just a ten-minute drive to the cultural district or the Stockyards. A complimentary hotel shuttle will take you anywhere within a three-mile radius, too, so that saved us a ton on cab fare and got us out of more than one instance of too much champagne popcorn. And bellboy/driver Casey is simply adorable.

But we hardly wanted to leave our room to explore. We know the new trend in hotels is to see who can offer the greatest sleeping experience and this was one of the best. Our corner suite had a beautiful king size, four-poster bed with a decadently plush mattress that was big enough for a crowd (we’re just guessing).

There’s an indoor pool and Jacuzzi (just scope it out and time it right to avoid the screaming kids), and the hotel is dog-friendly, too, so it can be a vacation for the entire family.

So we implore you to explore Fort Worth this weekend and play tourist in your own backyard. Or, just add this to your favorites list for any time you’ve got tickets to the Bass or a Monster Truck Rally at the Convention Center. It sure as hell beats the drive back to Dallas, and really, can anyone get enough of those mini shampoos?
