When it comes to gay churches, they say 40 is the new 200. That’s because they’ve packed centuries’ worth of history, good deeds and potluck suppers into their relatively short time on this earth.
And so, we’re proud, excited and flat-out giddy that our very own Cathedral of Hope is turning 40 this month with a celebration that would make even Paris Hilton jealous of its all-the-stops-pulled-outness.
On Saturday, July 24, the Dallas INFOMART will become “Cathedral for a Day” to welcome guests from all over the world, ready to celebrate this milestone achievement. Tickets are only $40 and include a welcome toast, cash bar, food, a live band and entertainment by Judy Tenuta. We just hope she brings her accordian or at the very least, the guys from her 1991 music video, I Like Boyz. She’s as wildly funny as ever and we’re can’t wait to see her again.
And if you want to see even more of the petite flower, there are 200 VIP tickets available for $80 each, which includes 2 hours of open bar after the main event, a live auction and even more Judy Tenuta! (Clearly they haven’t done the math on the damage we can do to an open bar in two hours, but we’ll be good. It’s not nice to make churches lose money.)
Then after all the amazing festivities on Saturday night, it’s time to participate in the worship services that have made this a world-famous church. On this special Sunday, morning services will be held at the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Plus, early risers can enjoy an 8:30 a.m. showing of the short documentary, Architecture of Peace, about world renowned architect Philip Johnson and his work on the Interfaith Peace Chapel. You know, the one that looks like a roller coaster when driving down Inwood Road.

And from all of us at Gay List Daily, here’s to another 40 great years of service to the GLBT community of Dallas – and the world.
Can we get an “Amen!”?
