Making Fun of Things. It’s What Gays Do.
How’s that for our official slogan as a people? Well, it certainly fits us, that’s all we know. (Who wants to buy the official t-shirt?)
So how excited are we for an entire show based on mocking the most successful shows in Broadway history? Uptown Players puts its own spin on the smash musical hit, Forbidden Broadway and we can’t wait.
Everything from a chain-smoking, has-been Annie to gay faves like Rent, Hairspray and Mamma Mia!, each show gets its comeuppance. Some of it’s deserved, some of it maybe not so much, but it’s all hilarious nonetheless.
The show is definitely a big draw for theater geeks, but there’s something for everyone. After all, even if you’ve never seen a Broadway show in your life (and if so, why are you reading Gay List Daily?), you’ve heard of West Side Story. You’ve witnessed the massed suicides after each farewell tour of Phantom of the Opera is announced. And who could possibly not be painfully aware of the fur-ball disaster known simply by its more popular acronym: CATS (né Can’t Avoid This Shit).
FB is one of those Off-Broadway staples that will probably still be running 600 years from now when Manhattan is under 1,000 feet of ice and being run by apes from another planet under the watchful guidance of New York Mayor Cher. By then, someone will surely have created Forbidden Forbidden Broadway, in which the show that sends up Broadway is itself ridiculed. Wow, that’s so meta it makes our head hurt.
