Eating for free usually means having to sit and listen to our parents talk politics while showing off their latest bunions and Mom’s cluster of liver spots that looks like The Last Supper. Sure, they always foot the bill, but it makes us seriously wonder if grub for gratis is actually worth it.
Well, it definitely can be. But you’ll have to go to Screen Door for its monthly “First Mondays” event. The next one is this coming Monday, February 7. All you have to do is call and make a reservation and you’ll be the first people in Dallas to try some of Chef David McMillan’s latest creations. Two courses, in fact!
This week, he’s featuring Fried Gulf Oysters “Rockefeller,” (which are soooo much better than Fried Gulf “Oysters” Rockefeller), Brother Thelonius Braised Pork Shoulder, and Texas Sorghum-Lacquered Chicken Thigh and Green Papaya Salsa Sandwiches. Plus, he’ll have sides like Hominy Pudding and other options available for good measure.
Of course, if you prefer to order off the regular menu instead of eating a free two-course meal, you can get some of Screen Door’s amazing gourmet Southern food, like the best Fried Green Tomatoes we think we’ve ever eaten.
Or the luxurious Shrimp and Grits (above). We thought we knew what to expect from this dish, but we were wrong. Chef McMillan elevates mere grits and seafood to a whole new level, mainly because of that wonderful sauce filled with bacon, garlic and cream. It’s lick-your-neighbor’s-bowl good.
So join us this Monday (we’ll be there, because we’re anywhere the word “free” is) for First Mondays. All you have to do is tip, but if you’re like us, you won’t be able to resist one of their expertly made cocktails. Or a dessert or two.
Heck, you can even come sit with us at our table. Just keep your Virgin Mary appendix scar to yourself.
5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
1722 Routh Street
One Arts Plaza, Dallas
Reservations Required (mention “First Mondays”), limit 6 per party
