Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Way Out West In Hollywood

When we travel to L.A. it’s usually because we’ve been hired to play “Sexy Cereal Eater #3” in a TV commercial or make another guest appearance on a cable access porn toddler-pageant reality show. Or because we’ve gotten another invitation to join the Church of Scientology. (Why won’t they ever let us in?)

But no matter where we venture out, from the Hollywood Walk of Fame to the edge of the Santa Monica Pier, site of the final scene of Ruthless People (the best Bette Midler movie ever filmed, BTW), there’s only one place we choose to call home. And that’s one of America’s ultimate gay meccas, the little city that could, West Hollywood.

Everything great about California can be found here on two of the most famous boulevards in the world: Santa Monica and Sunset, and every little side street in between. The vibe is laidback, the eye candy is abundant and celebrities can be seen at almost every turn (like Chloë Sevigny yelling at someone on her mobile phone. A-List!).

But whatever your itinerary, here are our picks for one perfect day in West Hollywood and beyond.

Where We Keep Our Luggage
We don’t sleep much when we’re in WeHo, but one of the best hotel finds in the area is Andaz West Hollywood, a swank Hyatt property that will make you think you’re a rock star (or at least a spoiled pop princess). Gorgeous rooms with large windows overlook either the Sunset Strip or the star-studded homes of the Hollywood Hills. Amenities include a free mini-bar (non-alcoholic, of course), but don’t knock it – we can eat our weight in Snickers at 4:00 a.m. There’s complimentary wine service in the evenings, which is great to take upstairs to the stunning pool and watch the sun set before a long night out.

They say it’s the most important post-hangover meal of the day, and our favorite spot for some eggs and French Toast is Joey’s Café. Wait for a seat outside, because there’s plenty to see. Hot guys walking their dogs. Hot guys picking up their dry cleaning. Hot guys waiting for you to hurry up and eat so they can have your table. It’s casual, hip and just right for getting the day started off right.

Rent a convertible and leave the quaintness of West Hollywood behind for a couple of hours and head to Malibu, land of movie stars. Drive up the Pacific Coast Highway and experience some of the best seafood we’ve ever eaten from a very unlikely little dive called Malibu Seafood. Order at the counter (just on the other side of the fresh fish market) and head to one of the outdoor tables overlooking the Pacific Ocean just on the other side of the road. Plus, it’s BYOB, so grab a bottle of wine and pack a tablecloth and candles to fit in with the locals. The food is cheap, the view is spectacular and the experience 100% California.

Mid-Afternoon Shopping
Some gays like to go antiquing on vacation. Others seek out collectible art. Us? We’re happy to spend an hour or two finding new underwear for our expansive collection, now valued by Sotheby’s as one of the most valuable in the land. And there’s no place better than the flagship store of one of our favorite underwear designers, the super-hot Andrew Christian. His boutique features the latest styles and limited edition collections, too. It’s like our Graceland. Seriously. We send postcards home every time we visit.

You’ve eaten cheap for lunch, had free wine in the hotel lobby, so it’s time for a nice dinner that’s just steps away from the elevator. On the lower level of Andaz West Hollywood is one of the area’s top restaurants, RH, a fabulous place for contemporary French cuisine that is elegant, yet casual enough that they’ll let you in wearing jeans. Ask the Chef what he recommends and forget your culinary inhibitions. We promise, you’ll eat something truly amazing. (We became hooked on the Perigourdine Poached Egg and Fois Gras, which is as delicious as it is pretentious!) And make sure to have at least one of their stellar cocktails, just for good measure. But just one. Where you’re headed next will more than make up for any feelings of sobriety.

Have the bellman hail you a cab and head for Beverly Hills. There, you’ll find what we call the mother ship. The altar where we sacrifice all our dignity. The holy grail of cocktaildom. It’s called Vodbox. Tucked away inside Nic’s Beverly Hills is a tiny room set at 4 degrees below freezing and filled with more vodka than any gay could possibly consume in one night. Reservations are required and available at 20-minute intervals, but it’s worth the trip. Pimp out in a fur coat and enter the box where a vodka impresario will take you on a journey through all the various kinds of vodka. The list is over four pages! Two vodka flights are $21, or enjoy three for $30. It’s a great photo-op, and the perfect start to a crazy night out.

Party the Night Away
It wouldn’t be a trip to West Hollywood without a stop at one of the country’s most famous gay bars, the Abbey. WeHo has some fantastic nightspots for the gays, and we recommend trying out as many as you can, but this one is a must-visit, just to say you’ve been there. Hang out with friends outdoors, head inside to catch a live performance, or just sit back and soak in the music. Check out this video for a taste of what’s in-store at the Abbey. Icons are icons for a reason.
