Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Emcee Glamour

If there’s one reason to get front-row tickets to Dallas Theater Center’s production of Cabaret, it’s Wade McCollum. Holy Jazz Hands, Batman. This is one of the sexiest guys on the planet. He sings. He dances. He’s got six-pack abs that each have their own six-pack abs. He’s so ripped, we’re pretty sure this is his head shot.

McCollum is just one of many reasons to head to the Wyly Theatre, which has been transformed into a cabaret itself, complete with coveted table seats and bar service. Plus, you’re right in the middle of the action. Close enough for McCollum’s sweat to fall conveniently into a test tube that we’re taking to our cloning laboratory to create our own version. There’s no such thing as a too-sexy pool boy, lawn guy or naked human towel holder, we always say.

The best part about DTC’s version of the long-time hit Kander and Ebb musical is its depth and grittiness, complete with partial nudity – something we definitely didn’t see when TV’s Leah Thompson starred in the touring Broadway production a few years back.

Set in Berlin just before the Nazi rise to power, most of the action takes place in the Kit Kat Klub where an American man (with a homosexual past) meets the exuberant Sally Bowles, the cabaret’s star attraction.

In every other production we’ve seen, she’s larger-than-life. Here, she’s much more understated, which is both refreshing and disappointing at the same time. Most post-performance debates we overheard in the aisles centered around the casting of Kate Wetherhead in the role, but we liked her. Something about her feels real. Again, gritty.

There are plenty of gay undertones (and overtones, too) in Cabaret, and that’s why we’ve always held it fondly in our heart. The guys are hot. The girls are hot. And in a nice twist, even one of the girls is a guy!

In this Cabaret, everything is beautiful.
