Fundraisers usually make us want to poke our eyes repeatedly with sharpened, salsa-covered fish sticks. Take the current NPR pledge drive over at KERA, for example. We love them over there, but for the love of God, these things are soul-crushing. If there is a Hell, it’s a placed filled with flames, non-stop requests for donations and the occasional appearance by a horned, hoofed Ira Glass.
Well, thankfully, Uptown Players knows how to put on a fundraiser. Men in drag, soulful black divas and a gaggle of twinks. That’s the secret to success in anything in life. Put that same team together and they could’ve taken down Bin Laden. Navy Seals ain’t got nothin’ on the fierceness of men in evening gowns.
This year’s Broadway Our Way features men singing women’s songs and women singing the men’s. Songs from current shows like Sister Act: The Musical to recent classics like Hairspray mingle with favorites from Dreamgirls, Chicago and Side by Side By Sondheim. That last number is sung by the evening’s master of ceremonies, Paul J. Williams and if we do say so ourselves, it’s probably our favorite number of the night.
But you know we have a huge, flaming crush on Paul (above as Sister Helen Holy) and think he can do no wrong. (Well, if we overlook his serial-killer stint from ’83 to ’85.) He’s hilarious, works with the crowd and keeps the show moving at a steady clip, which is no easy feat when there are more than 30 individual songs in two acts.
This popular show is in a very limited run, so you’ve only got four more chances to see it. Proceeds help fund Uptown Players and the great work they do, so it’s a really fun way to help out a great cause. Plus, there are amazing silent auction and raffle items, so your generosity can actually net you a fancy prize, too.
