Shreveport: Museums

Shrevport-MarilynCulture is alive and well in Shreveport and most of the museums are free. What a concept! We visited a few, but have two that are well worth the visit.

The R.W. Norton Art Gallery & Museum is vast and has a rather unusual permanent collection. The room full of creepy old dolls is always enjoyable, but it’s the Western (as in cowboy) art and sculpture that is truly fascinating. Or lie on the floor and look up the skirt of a life-size Marilyn Monroe between galleries.

Shrevport-MeadowsThe Meadows Museum  on the Centenary campus is far smaller, but prone to really unique exhibits, like the works of Bennett Sewell, on display through July 31, 2011. His unusual sculptures are made entirely of found materials and each has an elaborate story to go along with it.
