We wake up in strange beds even more now than back in our days as the Midwest’s highest paid male escort. Sure, we miss the stacks of dollar bills and Arby’s coupons that appeared like magic on the nightstand, but we’ve definitely moved up in the world.
Staying in great hotels is something we’ve come to expect as a perk of travel writing, but trust us, there are a lot of sadly average accommodations around this great big spinning globe of ours. So when we experience a hotel so remarkable in its service, comfort and amenities, we want to shout it from the rooftop pool.
If your travels take you to San Antonio, Texas, any time soon, remember the name Mokara. This luxury hotel and spa is so fantastic, it’s worth a trip to the Alamo city even if it’s not already on your vacation planner.
Situated on the famed River Walk, Mokara is close to all the touristy stuff, as well as great restaurants and shopping. But if you’re like us, you may never want to leave the hotel. There’s complimentary in-room Wi-Fi, morning coffee delivered to your door and every gay man’s dream – free pressing service from the hotel laundry.
The beds are incredibly comfy, the rooms spacious and high-ceilinged, and every bathroom comes standard with a Jacuzzi tub. A bath butler will even draw your bath exactly to your specifications. We asked for ours with Epsom salts, rose petals and Zac Efron. We guess two out of three isn’t bad. (Who knew rose petals were out of season?)
But don’t waste time in the room. The 17,000-square-foot spa and fitness center are available to all hotel guests, whether you book a treatment or not (but you will want to get pampered here). Separate wet areas for men and women each offer a hot tub, sauna and steam room.
Over a two-night stay, we went to the spa a grand total of seven times. We were so relaxed when we left Mokara, we hardly had the energy to carry all 36 freshly pressed pants and shirts to our car.
