Imagine an alternate universe where an American television show debuting in 1992 continued to release new seasons, movies and specials for 20 years. Yes, we’re cringing too at the thought of Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper: Still Hangin’ After All These Years.
Few shows in history have had such welcome longevity as Absolutely Fabulous, which launched on BBC2 back when most of us were still eating after-school pudding pops and dressing in our sister’s prom dress before anyone got home.
Yet here we are, hours before the U.S. premiere of the second new AbFab special of 2012, and we’re so excited to have these insane women back in our lives. Edina, Patsy, Saffy, Mother and Bubble are all back for a whole new adventure, taking place shortly after the first special saw Saffy’s release from prison and Patsy’s illegal drug debt exposed.
This second special, titled Job, finds Eddie putting her PR skills to the ultimate test in an effort to prove to Saffy that she’s still relevant and capable of earning an income. Unlike some iffier entries in the early 2000s, this episode easily holds up against the most celebrated classics with plenty of outrageous gags.
In fact, based on the first two of three scheduled specials, it’s as if creator/star Jennifer Saunders has found a revitalized interest in these characters and an interesting angle in exploring their advancement into the information age with clueless-but-enthusiastic abandon.
To that, we raise a glass of Champagne.
And a bump of coke for old time’s sake.
Absolutely Fabulous
