Some movies are tailor-made to be turned into lavish Broadway musicals. Fast & Furious 6 at the top of that list.
Until then, we have Sister Act, one of our favorite comedies of all time, to fill that void. Mostly because we’re infatuated with nuns. Sassy, singing ones all the more.
The story centers on Deloris Van Cartier (the role made famous by Whoopi Goldberg), a cut-rate lounge singer whose world is turned upside-down when she witnesses a heinous crime. In a witness protection program of sorts, she’s placed in a convent and soon she’s teaching the sisters to sing with soul.
But you already know the plot, we’re pretty sure. Which leaves room in all our brains to absorb the heavenly music, from eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Little Shop of Horrors).
It’s a show truly worthy of praise, holy and otherwise.
