We wish every day were Mardi Gras. For one, flashing our naked body parts would earn us exponentially more beads than public indecency citations.
But celebrating the festive holiday once a year is better than not at all.
Though not quite as debaucherous as the New Orleans shindig, Mardi Gras Oak Cliff is getting bigger, better and gayer with each passing year.
The weekend of Mardi Gras activities begins Saturday morning with the 5th Annual Dash for the Beads, a 5K run/walk/costume contest/whatever you want it to be. If you choose to run, be prepared for one of the most challenging routes in the entire state thanks to the hilly terrain. Register now because the price jumps on race day.
Saturday night, break out your favorite feathered mask for the OCarnivale Masquerade Ball at The Kessler Theater. With live entertainment by Club Wood and Zydeco Blanco, this event is one of the wildest parties of the season. Especially for those showing up in costume. (Secret identity = lowered inhibitions, after all.)
Everything culminates with the Mardi Gras Parade along Davis Street on Sunday. With floats, bands and thousands in festive attire, if you don’t leave loaded down with sparkly beads, you’re doing something wrong.
