Once upon a time, there was a Broadway musical that twisted fairy tales into an epic fantasy soap opera.
Nearly 30 years after its debut at San Diego’s Globe Theatre, it was turned into one of the most anticipated big-screen musicals in recent memory.
For us, it was mostly to see the incomparable Meryl Streep as the Witch with a dash of curiosity about Johnny Depp as the Wolf.
The movie version of the demented story of children’s lit superstars Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel was most definitely Disneyfied, but most moviegoers didn’t notice or simply didn’t mind.
