Much of reality TV is so over-the-top already that parody seems redundant.
But in the right hands, comedies that make fun of these types of shows can be pure gold. Reno 911!, The Hotwives of Orlando and The Hotwives of Vegas are each prime examples of excellence in spoofing.
Today, Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ debuts on Seeso, the new comedy streaming channel from NBC. Each 23-minute episode perfectly skewers shows like Million Dollar Listing and Property Brothers with absurdly self-centered characters each fighting for a piece of the real estate market in and around Los Angeles.
The premiere episode finds a group of realtors scrambling to make the best possible impression and land a big promotion when their boss announces that he’s looking for a partner.
Backstabbing and hilarity ensue.
We’re loving many of the characters already, but it’s the male couple Andrew (Ryan Gaul, above left) and Baxter (Drew Tarver, above center) that we find totally compelling (and entertaining). Their relationship is unique in that Baxter is gay and Andrew is straight. They just happen to be really good real estate partners who live together, dance together, and occasionally have sex in the same room as the other.
Between the smart writing and the skilled cast, Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ is worth watching, even if you don’t know a thing about any of the shows they’re spoofing.
That’s what they call in the real estate biz “above market value.”
