Young adult novels have come a long way since the days when we’d sneak into our sister’s room to read her Judy Blume books.
Even though we never got into the whole Harry Potter novel thing (or Twilight or The Maze Runner) as an adult, we have seen many of the movie adaptations and love that the stories work on so many levels and speak to so many different people.
Well, there’s a new book that just came out (no pun intended) that we’re proud to say we enjoyed reading as a full-grown man. It’s that charming, funny and well-written.
As you can see from the picture above, the novel is called Drag Teen. It comes from the hilarious mind of Jeffery Self, an actor who’s appeared on shows like Desperate Housewives and 30 Rock and a writer for faves like Fashion Police with Joan Rivers and Billy on the Street.
The story focuses on JT, a teenage boy hoping to get the hell out of Clearwater, Florida when he discovers a drag competition in New York City that comes with a scholarship. Could this be the ticket out of town he’s been so desperately hoping for?
Sure, it’s geared toward young adults, but as the kids say, the book is totally “on fleek.” And as the kids no longer say, we LOL’d—heartily and often. Of course, there’s a nice lesson or two thrown in to pump up self-esteem and all that.
Buy it for a young adult in your life, but make sure to get your own copy of Drag Teen for the beach this summer. Just leave your own wig at home.
Matted, sweaty polyester never did favors for anyone.
