National Coming Out Day isn’t until October 11.
But today can also be declared Coming Out Day thanks to the release of a new documentary by NYC-based filmmaker, Alden Peters.
Documenting his own coming out process entirely on camera, Peters combines his very personal, now very public story with a compilation of coming out videos from LGBTQ youth from all over the globe for a truly powerful, moving film.
As most of us know, baring our souls and the very essence of our beings can be one of the biggest struggles in terms of the psychological and emotional toll it takes on everyone involved. The stress of keeping such a big secret combined with anxiety over anticipated reactions can be nothing short of overwhelming.
But Coming Out perfectly captures the revelations to friends and family and all the awkwardness that comes with it. Watching the film creates a shared experience that brings back both difficult and joyful memories for some of us while providing hope and encouragement for those yet to make the big leap.
There’s a time and place for coming out, it’s just up to each person to determine that schedule.
For today, however, the time and place for Coming Out is over at Wolfe Video.
