For most of us, East Dallas means a trip to White Rock Lake. Or maybe the Dallas Arboretum. But if you venture a little further into Lake Highlands, you’ll find a real hidden gem: Cedar & Vine Community Kitchen + Cocktails.
We first tried it for lunch and loved it so much we knew we needed to return for our favorite meal of the week. So being the motivated-by-Bloody Mary sort of guys we are, we stayed true to our convictions and hit them up one recent Sunday.
Where last week’s Brunch of the Week featured wildly creative Asian-fusion takes on common dishes, Cedar & Vine instead takes the standards and executes them with precision and love. Because sometimes fussy isn’t our style (hard to believe, we know).
Start with the Bloody Mary. Rather than some cheap well booze, they pour Tito’s Handmade Vodka and mix it with good ol’ Zing Zang, our favorite bottled mix (often better than housemade ones). If you want to snazz it up a tad, have them throw in a slice of crispy bacon for a buck.
The food menu features greatest hits ranging from breakfast tacos loaded with goodies to a classic bacon-and-egg sandwich on buttery brioche. Waffle-battered fried chicken served with flour tortillas makes for a nice change from that usual concept, too.
But the true standout for us was the pure, simple, perfect Eggs Bennie. Expertly poached eggs, creamy hollandaise and easy-to-cut Canadian bacon and toasted muffin halves make for one superb representation of the ubiquitous brunch favorite.
So grab your friends and change your direction.
