Bottoms Up!

Victory is ours!

After so many years of ho-hummery in Victory Park, it’s exciting to see the district surrounding American Airlines Center finally coming into its own. Not only as a dining destination but an entertainment district that extends beyond what happens on the stage or arena nearby.

Among the new arrivals is JINYA Ramen Bar, a chain that got its start in California. Normally we’re not that jazzed about chain eateries, but this one’s well worth a visit.

If you have to wait for a table (or even if you don’t), head to the bar for one of many well-balanced cocktails with plenty of Asian flair, including the signature Lycheetini (pictured above, third from the left). It’s also among the offerings on the restaurant’s generous happy hour menu with drinks starting at $4 and small plates starting at $3.25 (daily from 3:00 to 6:30 p.m.).

Happy hour is always a great way to sample dishes and drinks at a fraction of the regular price, so we always love finding a new one for our roster.

Once you’re settled into your seat, there’s a lot to look at on the menu. From tacos and steam buns to rice bowls and salads, you’ll find plenty of non-ramen dishes to savor. But you can’t leave without sampling one of the ramens with that luscious, rich, flavor-layered broth that makes the noodle soup so famous.

What we love most about the ramen here is that you start with a pre-set bowl with an expertly crafted combo of ingredients. Then comes the fun part. Customize your experience with more than two dozen add-ons ranging from seasoned eggs to Brussels sprouts. One of our favorites turned out to be the vegetable soup ramen with a side of chicken chashu for added protein.

The possibilities are practically endless.

And if you run out of noodles and other goodies before you’re done with all that delicious broth, you can order a noodle refill and it’ll be brought to your table steaming and ready to devour.

Don’t worry, this is one place it’s OK to slurp.

Living The Ruff Life

If reincarnation exists, we would like to officially put in our request to come back in the next life as a dog owned by a gay man. Or anyone in the LGBT community for that matter. Buzzed. B-U-Z-Z-E-D. Buzzed.

In a world where coherent communication can change in an instant because of autocorrect, spelling is perhaps more important than ever. But for the next five Friday nights at Wheelhouse, it won’t be taken very seriously. That’s because the Boozy Bee kicks off this week with a lot on the line: drunken dignity, the approval (finally) of Mrs. Pendergrass from […]
