Wouldn’t it be wonderful if every meal, every day could be on a patio with mimosas?
Some might say if that were the case we wouldn’t look forward to brunch as much as we do now, but we’re willing to put our theory to the test for the sake of science.
Of course, there’s that pesky little thing called paying the bills and being an adult during the week, so for now (and for now only!) we will be content to partake of brunch delights only on the weekends.
This week, head to Wheelhouse in the Design District for not only one of our favorite patios in the city but also one of the best brunches we’ve had. As always, we began the chowing festivities with a Bloody Mary, made here with a homemade mix that packs some heat thanks to a Cajun spice blend.
After finishing our first cocktail, it was time for a blood orange margarita to sip while we made our numerous food selections. One of our favorites was the avocado toast. Yeah, yeah, we know that avocado toast can be found almost anywhere these days, but the Wheelhouse version can truly be a meal unto itself when you add an egg (pictured at top of story). Pumpkin seeds add crunch while bitter greens and spicy tomato balance out the creaminess of the avocado.
Other hits included the brisket breakfast tacos and the vegan breakfast bowl made with chia seed-coconut pudding, almond milk and fresh fruit. The latter made us feel way less guilty when it came time to order the blueberry pancakes with whipped lemon ricotta (as if eating healthy first canceled out the calories later).
On our visit, the weather was so great that we lingered at our table for a while over one final cocktail (a delightful cucumber-celery gimlet in case you’re wondering), watching the people pass by.
And dreaming of repeating this ritual again in seven days.
