Dip us in batter and slather on the mustard!
The State Fair of Texas is back, y’all. But unless you’ve been living under an abandoned tilt-a-whirl or in a factory making giant stuffed gorillas, you already knew that.
What you may not know is that Sunday, October 13 is LGBTQ Day.
Though it’s unofficial and not promoted by the fair itself, this is the day chosen by organizers at gaydfw.com for the local LGBTQ community to show its pride. So gather your friends, family and anyone else who wants to rainbow-up, gorge on decadent treats, then spin in circles on rides that test their digestive prowess.
Speaking of treats, we went to Fair Park yesterday for a less-crowded fair experience and came away with some new (old) favorites.
The Fletcher’s veggie dog was surprisingly close in taste to the original and something we might have never tried had we not been given one to sample. Plus, it pairs really well with a pickle beer from the Magnolia Beer Garden, our new favorite hangout near the Old Mill.
However, it was the fried collard greens, a hit dating back to 2013, that might just be our new midway must-have for years to come. Available with or without ham (we preferred the porky option), the creation from Chef Cassy Jones makes us love collard greens like we never thought possible.
Because anytime a vegetable gets thrown in a deep fryer, the world—even for a few minutes—becomes a much happier place.
