Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Your Friendly Neighborhood Mom & Pop Porn Shop

In the world of documentaries, there are people like Joe Exotic who absolutely crave the spotlight.

And then there are people like Karen Mason, who spends a good portion of Circus of Books asking her documentarian daughter why she’s making this movie and to stop filming her so much.

That’s just one of many pleasures of this new Netflix original film from executive producer Ryan Murphy. Neither Karen nor her husband/business partner Barry realizes the impact their little book shops had on both Los Angeles and the world (when they eventually became the largest distributors of gay porn).

In fact, the story of this mild-mannered Jewish couple becoming icons of gay culture in the L.A. area couldn’t be more charming—or improbable. Yet this industrious duo’s journey from loving parents to fierce activists offers up so much hope for humanity it’s truly a beautiful thing.

And speaking of beautiful (big) things, it’s great to see the legendary Jeff Stryker again after all these years, too.
