Put Some Gay In Your Day, Dallas!

Gayest Podcast Ever?

This week, we’re in legit quarantine after being exposed to a friend who’s tested positive for the C word. So while we await our test results, we really have extra time on our hands!

Luckily, we’ve come across an alternative to sitting in front of the TV all day and night—a podcast called Gayest Episode Ever. Now while we’re laundering our face masks, sanitizing our mailbox and doorbell, and baking our 313th batch of Chex Mix (with cereal we’ve woven ourselves), we have something fun to listen to.

Hosted by journalist Drew Mackie and screenwriter Glen Lakin, the LGBTQ podcast finds the duo discussing the “gay” episodes that nearly every sitcom seemed compelled to do.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

In fact, watching their favorite characters deal with queer issues probably helped many a homophobe deal with the reality of diversity a little bit better. Of course, in some cases, certain shows only managed to further perpetuate negative stereotypes, which definitely didn’t help our cause.

Episodes of the podcast highlight the gay storylines and “very special episodes” of classic series ranging from The Golden Girls and Designing Women to Maude and Friends. They even do deep dives into series you’d never expect to have LGBTQ themes, including what they argue is the first-ever sitcom gay joke on I Love Lucy. Or all the homosexual subtext on Bewitched. Or how shows decades ago dealt with trans characters.

Gayest Episode Ever is one hilarious podcast series that’s genuinely insightful in its unique approach to the examination of pop culture.

And definitely one that would get Homer Simpson’s approval.
