It’s difficult to do anything virtual with your dog. Trust us, we tried to have canine play dates over Zoom during the height of the lockdown and it never went well.
So for this year’s SPCA of Texas Strut Your Mutt fundraiser, “virtual” has a very loose interpretation. “Schedule-your-own” would be a more accurate way to describe this year’s 3K or 5K (or whatever number of Ks you want, really). This annual race is now in its 16th year of raising money to help end animal cruelty.
We’ve rescued five dogs over the years and our latest came from the SPCA, so we have a particular fondness for this organization these days. Not that we didn’t respect their work before, but now that we have a furry bundle of joy because of their services specifically, we’re always eager to help their cause in any way we can.
Instead of a one-day event, this year’s Strut Your Mutt has transformed into a three-day event between May 6 and 8 when you can take to the streets with your dog at your own time and pace, anywhere in town. Hell, anywhere in the world for that matter. And we’re pretty sure they won’t care if you walk your cat, iguana or black-footed ferret for the cause, either.
Registration runs from $25 to $40 depending on whether or not you want a shirt (and whether shirts are still available). Simply register online and you can stop by the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center to pick up your swag bag.
Then it’s simply up to you and your dog(s) to get outside and have a little fun in the sun for a great cause.
Wagging your tail is entirely optional.
