U.S. Sex Education Sucks (And Not In The Fun Way)

It’s a sad state of affairs that growing up we received the bulk of our sex education from a weekend course at our Methodist church. With a little bit of tedious anatomy and physiology thrown our way in Junior High health class.

Much of what we learned was through trial and error while poking around the first peen not attached to our own body.

For any adult living in America—especially the queer among us—it’s pretty clear that the shame-based, puritanical approach to sex ed in this country is a complete joke.

That’s why we need filmmakers like Alex Liu (pictured above with that tasty snack) to shed light on the failings of our society’s often hypocritical approach to sexuality.

In his new documentary, A Sexplanation, Liu explores the rock-hard facts surrounding this pandemic of educational failure.

And he’s armed with a ton of stats.

More than 700,000 queer people have endured conversion therapy.

Only 10 states plus D.C. require sex education to teach that queer people are normal.

Seven states actually require teaching homosexuality is bad.

Only 17 states require sex education be medically accurate.

31 states require stressing abstinence or the importance of sex within marriage

Only 20 states plus D.C. require teaching about birth control.

The UN defines comprehensive sex education as age-appropriate, scientifically-accurate, and non-judgemental.

75% of people don’t report when they’ve been raped or sexually assaulted.

U.S. teenagers have the highest pregnancy rate in the developed world.

Since 2016, 17 states have declared pornography a public health crisis.

Utah was the first state to pass a resolution declaring pornography a “public health hazard.”

He approaches it all with a great deal of humility and humor to prove several points. In the name of research, he even masturbates in an MRI machine. (Been there, done that, right?)

Experts weigh in on how to begin to fix things in America, but it’s going to be a long road, especially in today’s world with GOP morons ruining every bit of progress we’ve made as a country.

But A Sexplanation is at least a step in the right direction.
